THE first Builth Wells Charity Aquathlon is taking place this summer, on Sunday, August 11.

The event comprises a 400m (16 length) pool swim in Builth Swimming Pool, followed immediately by a 3k run around the Groe.

Organisers Adam Johnstone and Helen Tuite thought it would be good to offer an event with a bit of a difference.  It's really aimed at those people who haven't taken part in an event like this before, but anyone is welcome to enter.

Adam, who is a member of Builth & District Running Club, said: “They're only short distances, so hopefully it will appeal to all abilities.

OTHER NEWS:

“You can do any stroke in the swim and you can even walk the 3k route if you're not up to running.

“You'll need to be at least 18 at or before December 31, 2024, to take part. But we're hoping that if it's a success, we could make it an annual event, and incorporate younger participants next year.”

The aquathlon costs £10 to enter. This, and any sponsorship raised, will go to the Builth Wells Cancer Research UK committee to raise much-needed funds into research.

It will be a microchipped timed event and all entrants will receive a medal, plus there will be awards for winners of different age categories.

Helen said: “We chose Builth Wells Cancer Research as we felt that cancer has touched everybody in some way.

“We've kept the entry fee low to encourage more people and we'll be sending a sponsor form to all those taking part in the hope they'll raise a bit of sponsorship for this amazing cause.”

Corporate sponsors and supporters for the event are Freedom Leisure, Preserved Timber Products, Jewson, Hay and Brecon Farmers, Smithfield Tractors, Williams Building Contractors, Builth Wells Financial Planning and the Co-op.

Helen added: “We're so grateful for the support we've received so far from local organisations, which means that all of the money raised from individual sponsorship will go to the charity.

“But we'd still welcome corporate sponsorship from other organisations who'd like to be involved.”

Closing date for entries is August 4 or when the number of entrants reaches 99. If you'd like to take part, visit entrycentral.com/BuilthWellsAquathlon2024.
