Police officers investigating a 'hit and run' along one of Newtown's busiest roads have found the white vehicle they were looking for following a public appeal for information.

A black Audi and the white vehicle were involved in the crash at the traffic lights near St David's Church in New Road at around 8pm on Monday (April 1) which prompted a large emergency response.

Police said the white vehicle fled the scene of the crash.

The occupants of the Audi were checked by paramedics at the scene.

In an update on Thursday afternoon (April 4), Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Following the appeal we sent regarding the road traffic collision on New Road, Newtown, we can confirm that we have made contact with the driver of the white vehicle and are no longer appealing for information."

Fire crews from Newtown and Montgomery were called to the incident with the latter saying they received a report that people were trapped inside one of the vehicles.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving two private motor vehicles, one of the vehicles fled the scene.

"The remaining vehicle’s occupants self-extricated and were cleared by Ambulance Service personnel who were also in attendance.

"Dyfed-Powys Police are carrying out an investigation into the vehicle that fled the scene.

"Crews utilised small gear and grab packs at the scene.  Crews left the scene at 9.29pm."
