A NEW committee was chosen at the AGM of the Llandrindod Wells and District University of the Third Age (U3A) in March.

It was attended by over 110 of the organisation’s 255 members, with the new committee made up of both experienced and new members.

Thanks were given to the retiring chair, Roger Cumberland, and programme secretary, Nick Talbott. The U3A continues to grow and thrive with well attended monthly meetings, held in the Metropole Hotel, and 22 active interest groups meeting to pursue interests which cover a widely diverse range of subjects.

The AGM was followed by an interesting talk from Kathy Biggs, a successful local author, and Lynzie Fitzpatrick, of Kathy’s publishers Honno Press, based in Aberystwyth.

OTHER NEWS:

The discussion provided a fascinating insight into Kathy’s early journey into writing which started when she enrolled on an 8-week Aberystwyth University course on short story writing hosted by The Wyeside in Builth Wells.

She enrolled on further courses covering script writing, poetry and novel writing – all after she had turned 60. Her experiences have led to two novels being published.

In many ways Kathy embodies the principles and ambitions of U3A, in lifelong learning

The talk included two readings from Kathy’s published books, ‘The Luck’ and ‘Scrap’. Scrap was published in June 2023 and was the Welsh Books Council’s book of the month for July last year. She was also Welsh Libraries Author of the Month for last July.

Many of the audience said they had read her books and are looking forward to the next publication with anticipation.

The next U3A meeting is on April 8. Visitors and new members welcome. All information can be found on the organisation’s website.
