A PLEA has been made for volunteers and trustees to help save a Powys town’s swimming pool, described as a “cherished” community asset.

Hay Swimming Pool is described as needing major structural refurbishment and investment, with supporters claiming it cannot reopen without more people coming on board.

A public meeting is set to be held at the end of the month in Hay-on-Wye to discuss a way forward and support from the local community has been described as crucial to the pool's survival.

Louise Llewellyn posted an appeal on Facebook earlier this month, describing it as a “critical moment” in the pool's 50-year history.

“Hay Swimming Pool has been a cherished community asset for 8 years, thanks to the dedication of a small group of trustees and volunteers,” said Louise.

“However, we're facing a critical moment in the pool's history and sadly cannot re-open again without new support and trustees.

OTHER NEWS:

“Our beloved pool, over 50-years-old, needs major structural investments and refurbishment. The pool was built in the 1970s with a 25-year lifespan, we're at a crucial point to secure its future.

“The wooden structure and the pool ventilation system can no longer cope with just a sticking plaster and need(s) major work to allow it to reopen.

“Without an influx of support, including new trustees, then (we) will have to look seriously at possible closure. This is a pivotal moment for our community asset.”

A public meeting is being held on Wednesday, January 31, at 7pm at Hay Primary School, to discuss options and hopefully find new trustees.

It’s been a difficult few years for the pool. The parents, teachers and friends association at the primary school kept the pool open in 2016 after taking it over from Powys County Council. It was closed in 2019 following health and safety concerns, but money was found to refurbish it.

“Your attendance and support are crucial to the pool's survival,” added Louise.

“We're looking for volunteers to assist with admin, cleaning and pool management.

“Additionally, we're seeking committed individuals to join as trustees. Your involvement could be the lifeline the pool desperately needs.

“In the long term, as well as the structural issues, we aim to offer paid positions, but for now, we're focused on maintaining accessibility.

“We don't want to raise prices, ensuring that the pool and swimming lessons remain inclusive for everyone.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has used the pool and generously supported our past fundraisers. Your contributions have been invaluable.

“Let's come together to keep the spirit of Hay Swimming Pool alive.

“If you can offer your time, skills or ideas, please get in touch. Together, we can make a splash and save our pool. Without support, the pool will be forced to close this year.”
