A RECYCLING centre in Powys is closing temporarily later this year so that important safety upgrades can be carried out.

Improvements due to be carried out at the Brecon Household Waste Recycling Centre include introducing safer hardstanding across the site, upgrading drainage, implementing a new one-way system with easier access and a safer parking area, and introducing a dedicated area for leaving items for re-use.

The site, located on the Ffrwdgrech Industrial Estate, will close on Thursday, November 16, for three months.

OTHER NEWS:

“We know that the closure of the Brecon Household Waste Recycling Centre for three months will be unwelcome news, and we apologise for the inconvenience,” said Councillor Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council cabinet member for a Greener Powys.

“The essential works planned for this refurbishment need to be done for the safety of all users and to ensure the site remains fit-for-use going forward.”

Although many of the improvements to the site will not be noticeable to visitors, they are considered essential to make sure the facility complies with legal requirements, operates safely and remains easy for visitors to access and use.

“We are working closely with Potter Group, who run the councils recycling centres, and the contractors to ensure we have picked the quietest time of the year and to make sure we keep the length of time the site is closed to a minimum,” added Cllr Charlton.

“With a county as large and sparse as Powys, we appreciate users of the Brecon Household Waste Recycling Centre will have to travel much further to visit another recycling centre while the refurbishment takes place. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

While the recycling centre is closed, residents wishing to recycle items not collected at the kerbside will be able to visit one of the other four centres in Powys, the closest of which are in Llandrindod Wells (open Wednesday-Sunday) and Lower Cwmtwrch (open Monday and Thursday-Sunday).

Cardboard can still be taken to one of the following local community recycling sites: Brecon Richway, Crickhowell, Cwmdu, Hay-on-Wye, Llangynidr, Sennybridge and Talgarth.

County Times:

Cllr Charlton said: “While we hope most people will be able to hang on to their waste and recycling which cannot be collected through the kerbside collections for the duration of the closure, or take to an alternative site, we appreciate this isn’t so easy for garden waste.

“With this in mind, we are planning to provide alternative arrangements for residents to recycle their garden waste over the autumn/winter months and will publicise details as soon as they are confirmed.”
