FOUR primary school children and one man remain in hospital today following a road traffic collision involving a school bus and a number of young pedestrians.

The incident, which is believed to have involved the bus colliding with a number of primary school pupils, occurred at around 3.25pm in Llanfair Caereinion on Monday, May 23.

The collision occurred at the end of the school day as pupils from both Ysgol Gynradd Llanfair Caereinion and Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion were leaving for the day.

Emergency services were reported to have been on the scene within minutes, with the collision resulting in five people being taken to hospital. Three children were airlifted to hospital while another child and an adult were taken to hospital by land ambulance. The remaining child was discharged at the scene. All five children are described as being primary school aged.

“The police investigation into the road traffic collision in Llanfair Caereinion on Monday, May 23, is continuing today,” said a Dyfed Powys Police spokesperson.

“A school bus and a number of young pedestrians were involved in the collision which occurred at about 3.25pm on School Lane, just off Neuadd Lane, Llanfair Caereinion.

“One man and four children remain in hospital and are described as being in a stable condition at this time. One child was discharged from medical care yesterday. The children are primary school aged. There were no passengers on the bus.

“The bus has been removed for forensic examination and the road has reopened.

“Police Community Support Officers and school community police officers will be attending the school this morning to provide support.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to an incident in Llanfair Caereinon this afternoon at 3.26pm on Monday, May 23, involving a vehicle and five children.

“Three of the five children were flown to hospital for treatment, while another child and an adult were taken to hospital by land ambulance. The remaining child was discharged at scene.”

Both schools have been reported as being open this morning, with secondary school pupils currently sitting their GCSE exams. Psychology, Welsh, health and social care and law A Level and AS Level exams due to be sat today are said to be unaffected.

Both Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion and Ysgol Gynradd Llanfair Caereinion are currently being supported by Powys County Council's school service officers.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council confirmed on Tuesday that both schools are open. Dr Caroline Turner, meanwhile, the chief executive of the local authority, said: “Our thoughts are with all those who were injured in yesterday’s incident and we wish them a speedy recovery.

“Officers from the council’s schools service are at both schools today to provide help and support to staff and pupils during this difficult time.

“The council will support any investigation into the incident by the appropriate authorities.”
