TRIBUTES have flooded in, praising a Powys firefighter who is set to retire after almost half a century of service.
Crew manager David Lloyd, a familiar face at Presteigne Fire and Rescue Station, will officially step down on October 31, 46 after he first joined the service, in March 1980, following an "extraordinary career".
"After an incredible 46 years of service, crew manager David Lloyd is retiring from the fire service, bringing an end to an extraordinary career serving the community of Presteigne and beyond," said Presteigne Fire and Rescue Station in a Facebook post on September 4.
"Dave joined us in March 1980 and was already busy putting fires out before some of his current crew mates were even thought about.
"His final day will be 31st October and what an incredible achievement that is. The commitment, dedication and service Dave has shown over almost half a century is truly second to none.
"Dave will be sorely missed by everyone at Presteigne Fire Station. His wealth of knowledge and experience is something that simply can't be replaced.
"Throughout his career, he has always been willing to share that knowledge, passing on his experience, advice and plenty of stories to fellow firefighters — and more recently, to the next generation through our Presteigne fire cadets.

"Dave has made a lasting contribution to the station, the service and the communities we've been proud to serve, and we are incredibly grateful for everything he has given over the past 46 years.
"From all of us at Presteigne Fire Station, thank you, Dave, for your service, dedication and friendship. We wish you all the very best for your retirement — you've certainly earned it."
Glowing tributes have poured in from the local community and further afield, from colleagues and friends across the service.
Craig Thomas, head of operational response for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MWWFRS), said: "Huge congratulations Dave, tremendous service to the community, it was an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside you, enjoy your retirement."
Machynlleth Fire and Rescue Station also congratulated Mr Lloyd. "Congratulations, Dave, on a truly well-earned retirement," the station said.
"Forty-six years of dedication to the service and the community is a remarkable achievement."
