THERE will be a new addition to the rich fabric of shops on Builth Wells High Street, with the Silver Pig – a sewing studio – planning on opening soon.

The Silver Pig aims to be a “treasure trove” of fabrics and craft materials, while offering sewing workshops and classes.

Owner Hazel Martin may be a name familiar with some locals, as she was previously a maker who made her mark at the Corner Collective, which recently moved premises in town.

Hazel’s offerings included painted rocks, logs key rings and hand sewn miniature collectors’ bears.

Now, she is branching out on her own, and will be taking up residence at No22 High Street – the former home of the Root Cellar.

The Silver Pig Facebook page appeared on September 29 and was soon followed by a post in which Hazel said she is hoping to be open within the next month.

“We will shortly be opening our little shop and sewing studio in Builth Wells High Street,” said the post.

“The Silver Pig will be a treasure trove of fabrics and craft materials, with an emphasis on creatively recycling and reducing fabric and clothing waste.

“We are currently painting and decorating the space and hope to be opening in three or four weeks’ time.”

The name Silver Pig derives from Hazel’s love of collecting Victorian pin cushions, the silver pig being a favourite.

She hopes the shop will become the “go-to” destination for fabrics, crafting and sewing.

“The Silver Pig will be a welcoming high street shop that sells fabrics, craft supplies and sustainable sewing materials while offering sewing workshops and classes,” she told us.

“The business will also specialise in recycling fabrics and clothing, encouraging sustainability and creativity. We will also be offering some repairs and alterations.

“Our aim is to inspire and empower people to sew, craft and upcycle, while reducing fabric waste and fostering a creative community.

“We would like to become the go-to destination in Builth Wells for fabric, crafting supplies and sewing education.”

Hazel added that she was buoyed to open up her own space during her experience being associated with the Corner Collective – a partnership she is looking to continue.

“I have always been an avid painter and stitcher; I have been one of the makers in the Corner Collective for over a year,” she said.

“I have loved my connection with this vibrant, creative group and will be continuing with my painting there; the new shop will complement and support the Corner Collective.”

Hazel studied as a mature student at Carmarthen School of the Arts, where she earned a diploma in garment technology and fashion and clothing, as well as painting and textiles.

“I am a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none,” she admitted.

“My enthusiasm for creating has always been a priority and inspiring others to create is a great passion of mine.

“I am currently running dressmaking courses at the Corner Collective and in the new shop I will have a permanent sewing studio in which to offer courses in garment making, doll making, bear making and also one-off workshops in many sewing related activities.

“I would love the Silver Pig to become a welcoming creative space in which people feel supported and encouraged to begin their own creative journey, without pressure or judgement.”
