With just two weeks to go until the 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod, Powys is preparing top welcome people from across Wales for one of Europe’s biggest youth festivals.

In a fortnight, Powys will welcome the Maldwyn 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod. Excitement is building for the large-scale event, which is being held from May 27 to June 1 in the fields of Mathrafal Farm by Meifod.

Asa thousands of people are expected to travel to Meifod for the event, Powys County Council are making preparations by working closely with the Urdd, the local organising committee, local communities, businesses and volunteers to make the most of the opportunities the Urdd Eisteddfod brings.

Cllr James Gibson-Watt, leader of Powys County Council, said: “We’re extremely excited and honoured that the 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod is taking place in Powys and to welcome children and young people and their families from across Wales as they attend and participate in this special festival.

“The Urdd Eisteddfod was last held in Montgomeryshire in 1988 and excitement has been growing for some time as the festival draws nearer.

“Powys County Council is incredibly proud to support this year’s event. I’m looking forward to the week ahead and encourage children, young people, families and friends from across Powys to take the opportunity to visit the Eisteddfod near Meifod.”

Powys County Council added that they will have a prominent presence on the Eisteddfod field and will be using the week as an opportunity to showcase Powys to those attending through local product tasting, tourism and culture to Welsh language promotion and activities as well as promoting recruitment opportunities at the council.

There will also be activities for children and young people and to take part in.

AS 90,000 people are expected to visit the Powys field over the course of the festival, it is estimated that the event will provide a £6 million boost to the local economy.

Cllr David Selby, Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said: "A sense of excitement is growing as preparations continue for what we are sure will be a fantastic event later this year.

"The Maldwyn 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod will provide plenty of opportunities for local businesses as thousands of visitors are expected to visit this year's event.

“I would urge accommodation businesses to include themselves on the accommodation list and local businesses to attend the Business Breakfast that is taking place in Welshpool."
