STAFF at a Powys tea room and B&B have thanked the public for an “outpouring” of support and kindness after announcing last week they are to close in a few months.

Penbont House revealed on Friday, March 1, that it will be shutting in May as the business is deemed “no longer viable” in the current economic climate.

The tea room sits on the shore of Pen y Garreg Dam, nestled right in the heart of stunning Elan Valley.

Offering stunning views, it was only refurbished in 2019 and extended to include five en-suite rooms, named after the dams of the Elan and Claerwen Valleys, but it has been unable to stave off the wolves stalking hospitality sector businesses.

A post was published on the Penbont House social channels on Sunday, thanking locals and customers for their support since the news broke.

“To our wonderful community, friends, followers and visitors, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for the outpouring of kind words and support since we announced the closure of our tea rooms,” said the post.

“Your comments have truly touched the hearts of the staff here at Penbont during this bittersweet time.

“As we navigate through these final months, we want to assure you that we are committed to making every moment count.

“For the remaining time our doors are open, we promise to make your visit to our tea rooms the best experience possible. Your continued patronage and support means the world to us, and we are determined to create lasting memories together.

“For as long as we are here, the kettle will be boiling, ready to welcome you… there's ample time for those who haven't yet experienced our tea rooms to do so. And, of course, we eagerly anticipate welcoming back our cherished regulars with open arms.

“Thank you for being a part of our journey. Let's cherish these moments and create beautiful memories together until the very end.”

In Friday’s post, the tea room announced it would continue to open fully until May 13, and overnight guests will be welcomed until May 20.

The news ignited huge interest and support, with almost 200 responses to date.

One said: “Really saddened and disappointed with this decision, this tearoom is a huge asset for tourism in our area and the Elan Valley after everything that has been done to create a welcoming destination for our visitors.”

Another added: “This is a massive blow to locals as well as tourists. Having somewhere as lovely as Penbont has been an asset to the valley.”
