Powys County Councillors have arranged a meeting with the trustees of a Welshpool care home over its announced closure.

At a meeting of Welshpool Town Council on February 28, councillors received an update after raising the issue of Dorothy Hughes House, a care home within the town, which announced it would be closing earlier this year.

The update came after councillors reportedly received concerns from residents over the forthcoming closure and if any campaign could be organised to save the house.

Cllr Nick Howells confirmed that Powys County Councillors, including Welshpool representatives Cllr Richard Church and Cllr Graham Breeze, were scheduled to meet with trustees to “discuss exactly what is happening.

Cllr Howells added: “After this meeting, one of the county councillors will report back to the town council so we can get a clearer idea of what is happening.”

The care home made the announcement on February 1, saying: “The Trustees of Dorothy Hughes House, the residential home for elderly persons in the town for so many years, are sad to announce that the house will no longer be able to accept residents from this forthcoming April.

“For around 35 years the house has offered secure, comfortable and sociable accommodation for elderly persons who prefer to live in a comfortable and communal home rather than to continue living on their own.

“The trustees have tried always to provide this accommodation at an affordable cost but sadly, rising prices and costs have made this increasingly uneconomic and mindful of their duty to safeguard the trust, the Trustees have reluctantly decided to close the home.

The house first opened as a care home in 1993, with the building itself dating back to 1978.

On the announcement of the closure, chairman of the trustees Ruth Canning added: “My late Father was one of the founding trustees of the home, which was opened firstly as an Abbeyfield home, but has for many years now been run under our own management.

“I am so pleased that we have been able to offer a loving home to so many residents over this time. I wish to thank my fellow trustees and all our staff past and present for their wonderful service.”
