A POWYS Young Farmers Club has raised a stunning £8,000, which it is donating to two cancer charities.

Funds from Pontfaen YFC’s Illuminated Charity Tractor and 4x4 Run 2023 held in December will be split between Prostate Cancer and the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.

Last Sunday (February 25), Pontfaen YFC hosted their annual pre-lambing Sunday lunch and extended invitations to both charities to collect their cheques from the tractor run.

A total of £4,000 was presented to Owen Pugsley, head of commercial operations for Prostate Cymru. Owen shared with the attendees the organisation's plans to introduce a mobile unit aimed at reaching communities in the Powys area to facilitate early detection of prostate cancer.

During the event, Owen met Gethin Havard, former county president of Brecknock YFC, and Gerwyn Rees, both of whom have recently undergone treatment.

Another £4,000 was also presented to club president Nicky Williams, who together with Rhiannon Thomas, Karen Davies and Amy Russell, is part of the Arctic Blast Challenge team.

On March 13, they will embark on a 100km trek across the Arctic Circle in seven days. Traversing frozen lakes and skirting ancient glaciers using snowshoes while carrying provisions and rotating shifts to haul equipment.

Their fundraising efforts are dedicated to supporting the Velindre Cancer Centre.

An additional sum of £288.25 was presented to Nicky, who is part of the Arctic Blast team ‘Venture to Victory, Velindre Cancer’.
