A former headteacher raised over £400 for Parkinson’s UK through a cycling challenge at the front of a Welshpool supermarket.

On Thursday, February 22, Philip Jones took part in a challenge that saw him cycling for hours on an exercise bike at the entrance of Morrisons in Welshpool, to raise money for Parkinson’s UK.

The challenge comes a few weeks before he is due to start a ambitious fundraising challenge in aid of Parkinson’s UK, as he takes on seven 10k runs over the course of a week, starting on Monday, March 18 and ending with the Welshpool 10k on Sunday, March 24.

Mr Jones’ challenge at Morrisons was supported by the supermarket, as well as Great Fitness and Tiny Brooks. He was also joined by Morrisons Welshpool Community Champion Debbie Gates.

He said: “The cycling challenge was put together to raise money for Parkinson’s UK but also to raise awareness for the March challenge and the big fundraising push we’ll be doing in that week.

“It was a fantastic event, especially as it connected people. I heard so many stories about how Parkinson’s has impacted people’s lives in the local area. It ended up becoming as much a social event as it was a fundraiser.

“We saw incredible generosity from both the staff and customers at Morrisons, with especially outstanding work from the community champion Debbie Gates. Between us we cycled roughly 25 miles over the course of the morning.

“In short, it was a really good event. It ticked all the right boxes.”
