A five-star tea room in Powys has been put up for sale, with the owner admitting she is sad to be selling up.

The Clock Tower Tearoom sits near Knighton’s iconic Victorian Gothic clock tower, built in 1872, with owner Karen Aveyard announcing last week that she is selling, as “grandmother duties” beckon.

“I am only selling the tearoom now as my daughter and son-in-law, who already have three young children, are expecting twins in the summer,” said Karen,

“I feel the time has come to take on my nana duties for the immediate future.

“I will be very sad to leave, but I am currently talking to a number of interested parties with a view to passing on the tearoom to someone with new ideas but who also wants to provide good, locally sourced, home-cooked meals to all the current and new customers.”

Karen bought the tearoom from Chris Branford, a Knighton town councillor, in November 2022, when she decided to retire having run the business for 22 years.

“Since taking over, I have completely replaced and upgraded the kitchen and tearoom facilities, which resulted in a 5-star rating from Powys Environmental Health in June 2023,” added Karen.

“I have really enjoyed getting to know the people of Knighton and the many visitors to the town and giving them something slightly different from the other eating establishments in town.

OTHER NEWS:

“Our warm goats cheese salad, halloumi and red peppers panini and local sausages and mash have all proved popular, alongside the more normal sandwiches, homemade soups and jacket potatoes we offer on our regular menu.

“We have expanded the range of gluten free, dairy free and vegan options on the menu and I have found local makers for cakes, desserts and ice cream as well as jam, marmalade and chutneys, and local suppliers for meat and eggs.

“So, I hope I have been able to showcase all this lovely local produce to the customers.”

The Clock Tower Tearoom is located at No24 Broad Street in the heart of Knighton, and is surrounded by retailers, offices and a hotel, with multiple car parks nearby.

The business has been established for more than 30 years, with only two former owners, and benefits from a high reputation along with a regular and loyal clientele.

Known as a dog friendly cafe, Karen says takings average £1,500 per week with scope to increase revenues if desired.
