A POWYS pub has come up with a mouthwatering contest for the month of February – where you create a burger that could well be added permanently to the menu.

The pub in Cilmery, just outside Builth Wells, is ditching its traditional menu on Thursday nights in February and dishing up burgers just the way you like them… exactly the way you like them, in fact.

On Thursday evenings this month you can create your own burger, then name it.

Start with choosing your style of bun and pick from smashed beef patties, buttermilk chicken fillet or a spinach and lentil burger - with as many extras as you dare to add.

Each week the pub’s staff will choose a winner; the weekly winners from each of February’s five Thursdays will be put out to public vote and the winning burger will be added to the pub’s full menu.

I visited the pub last Thursday, February 1, and we came up with our own concoctions – the ‘King of Cilmery’ burger and the ‘Wally Woods’ burger.

Here’s what we made of the burgers. Spoiler… they were flipping amazing.

‘King of Cilmery’: It was all about quality ingredients for me, no bite wasted on salad. Credit where credit’s due, I did put pickles on it.

I started with a grill house style bun, two smashed beef patties and American cheese. I added chorizo, beechwood smoked bacon and onion rings, plus some greens in there with the pickles. You get a choice of two free sauces and I went for American mustard and buffalo hot sauce.

Total cost: £16

‘Wally Woods’: My other half put me to shame by adding lettuce to her burger, with two smashed beef patties on a grill house bun, beechwood smoked bacon, with chorizo, bacon jam and brie, adding garlic mayonnaise for the sauce.

Total cost: £18

Oh, and just for good measure, there are three sets of loaded fries on the menu too, either single portions or to share.

We opted for the pizza shares fries, topped with pepperoni, mozzarella, marinara sauce and ranch sauce, for £11.

There are also chilli nacho cheese fries, barbecue pulled pork fries and nacho fries (veggie), as well as a selection of other sides.

There are a plethora of cheeses, fillings and special fillings to add to your meaty creation, including BBQ pulled pork, flat iron steak, Yakitori chicken, chicken tikka, chicken goujons, scampi, stuffing, garlic and paprika bratwurst, jalapenos, peanut butter and gravy.

Don’t worry, there’s plenty of salad (free) to choose from too, and you can pick from a plethora of sauces (two free), including sriracha, sweet chilli, barbecue ketchup, mayo, ranch, Dijon mustard, English mustard and baconaise.

The Prince is run by the Beach family, headed by landlady Julie Beach. Son Tom, previously the head chef, still pitches in, and he will be in the kitchen on Thursdays.
