A former headteacher at Llanfair Caereinion is taking on a seven day fundraising challenge this year which culminates with completing the Welshpool 10k.

Philip Jones has said he is determined to complete an ambitious fundraising challenge in aid of Parkinson’s UK, as he takes on seven 10k runs over the course of a week, with the finale for the task scheduled to be the Welshpool 10k on Sunday, March 24.

Mr Jones, who completed the Great South Run to raise money for the charity in October 2023, said that he was inspired to take on a bigger challenge after taking part in the run and is inviting others to join in the fundraising efforts.

He said: “Seeing how many people have their own stories of a relative or friend living with Parkinson’s made me think that any future fundraiser should expand to let people try and take it on as well, so I wanted to put together something bigger than just me.

“My aims with the March 10x7 challenge is to raise money for Parkinson’s UK, as well as raise the profile of the organisation, but also get people exercising since the two are linked with evidence that an increase in physical fitness and exercise can help delay the onset of the disease.

“The challenge has taken on a more emotional dimension since I planned it. My dad, who inspired me to raise money for the cause as he was living with Parkinson’s, passed away in November. So in his memory, this challenge will help raise money, encourage people to embrace a healthy lifestyle and discuss this illness.”
