2024 is off to a good start for a Powys based cancer research charity, who raised over £1,000 with a traditional Welsh carol service.

The Llanfair Caereinion cancer Research Committee held a Plygain at Moreia Chapel in Llanfair Caereinion on January 5, which saw numerous performers entertain the crowd.

Starting at 7pm, the service, led by Gwilym Humphreys with Sioned Lewis on the organ, saw multiple groups taking to the stage to entertain the congregation with traditional songs and carols, with contributions to the collection on the evening as well as later donations bringing the total amount raised to £1,200.

Having entertained the audience in the first half, the groups and individuals performed again in the second half in the same order, before the evening culminated in all the men who had taken part performing together at the end of the Plygain, singing the traditional Carol Y Swper.

The event followed the success of the committee re-introducing the event to Llanfair in 2023, with the venue of Moreia Chapel taking the place of the old Seilo Plygain, which was held at Seilo chapel, Rhiwhiriaeth on the outskirts of Llanfair Caereinion.
