There are just a few days left to sign up to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity to run or walk along the new A487 Dyfi Bridge near Machynlleth this Saturday (January 13).

More than 200 people have already signed up for the exclusive event organised by Bro Ddyfi Appeal Committee for the Urdd Eisteddfod Maldwyn 2024 and Machynlleth Rotary Club since entries opened on New Year’s Day.

The five-kilometre fun run at 10am and 1.4-mile walk at 11am gives people the opportunity to enter the new bridge before it opens to traffic this Spring after three years of constructing the 725m long viaduct across the Afon Dyfi.

Bedwyr Fychan, chairman of the Urdd Eisteddfod Maldwyn 2024 committee, is encouraging people to take part and have fun in the family-friendly event.

OTHER NEWS:

“It offers something for everyone,” he said. “People can walk, run, take their prams or dogs for a walk.

“There’s also the views and excitement of being on the new bridge before it opens.

“If people are looking for a PB (personal best time) it’s going to be a fast course with a 5K.”

The Rotary Club of Machynlleth said members were pleased to have joined forces with the Bro Ddyfi Appeal for the 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod in producing what they described as "a memorable event for the town and the Dyfi Valley".

"The working committee of Clive Pearsall and Laura Day for Rotary and Bedwyr Fychan for the Ddyfi Appeal have organised a fully marshalled opportunity for the public to either walk across the bridge at  leisure or make it a 5km fun run," said the Rotary's  Roger Seagrave.

"Our sincere thanks to Jane Howells of Griffith Construction and her team for all their assistance."

People who have signed up for the event will need to register on the day on the Machynlleth side of the bridge. Organisers are reserving parking spaces near the bridge for people who have limited mobility. Everybody else is encouraged to park in the town such as the Maengwyn Street car park  (SY20 8DY) and walk roughly 15 minutes to the start line or travel by public transport.

Buses will replace trains between Newtown and Aberystwyth while engineering work takes place closing all lines along the Cambrian Line on Saturday and Sunday (January 14).

Bedwyr added: “We encourage everybody to go into town to have a cup of tea, cake, spot of lunch or visit the shops. Anything we can do to bring people into the town is a positive as well.”

It costs £12 for adults and £6 for children aged eight and older to take part in the 5K run, or £10 for adults and £5 for children for the walk.

New Dyfi Bridge developers Alun Griffiths Contractors also allowed a charity run along a route on the Newtown Bypass before it opened to traffic in 2018.
