A partnership between councils along the River Severn catchment area is hoping to raise £500 million in funding to deal with the issue of flooding.

As Powys is in the midst of several floods brought on by Storm Henk, Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams released a video on social media, detailing a partnership between eight Welsh and English councils located within the River Severn catchment area.

Called the Severn Partnership, the initiative hopes to secure £500 million of funding to change the way flooding is managed along the River Severn.

The partnership is led by Shrewsbury & Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski, and in addition to the eight councils it includes the Environment Agency, local wildlife trusts and a range of other organisations.

In the video, Mr Williams said: “Year in year out, the biggest issues for Montgomeryshire is flooding.

“We can see it’s that season again when the rivers are high, the water tables are high, the land is saturated, so any good rainfall gets the flooding out into our fields and sometimes closes roads.

“A new way of looking at flooding, I think the best way, is looking at the entire Severn River as an entity. Not just Welsh Government responsibility, not just UK Government responsibility, but a cross-border look at it.

“We’re spending millions of pounds into flooding in terms of stopping it across the board but what we need to do is get that money into the catchment, that money into our area, where if we can slow the river down, if we can look at the tributaries and where the confluence happens and see what we can do to solve this problem, rather than just push it up and down the river, which is what we’ve done for decades and it doesn’t work.”

Powys County Council is urging motorists to be cautious driving as the county continues to feel the impact of Storm Henk, with many roads affected by surface water and flooding, with rainfall totals are adding to already sodden ground triggering flood alerts throughout Wales.

Regarding their response to the flooding, spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “Flood warning are in place between Brecon and Glangwrynne and the county council is mobilising pumps in Crickhowell protecting residents.

“There are also three flood warnings on the Lower Severn and floodgates at Ystradgynlais have been closed for some days now and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

“Staff are working extremely hard to deal with the impact. However, we would urge motorists to remain cautious on county roads and not to attempt to drive through flood water.”
