AN attempted theft from a cash machine in Powys was apparently prevented thanks to diligent locals, who were said to have thwarted the thieves.

The attempted theft occurred at the ATM outside the Spar store on Rhayader’s West Street in the early hours of Thursday morning (November 16).

Reports locally said the incident occurred at around 3-4am, with a local resident reporting that the theft was prevented due to one or more persons disturbing the would-be thieves.

Rhayader county councillor Angela Davies labelled the attempted theft a “bold move”. She said: “While I understand the attempted theft was unsuccessful, I am disappointed that thieves disrespected our wonderful town in this way.

OTHER NEWS:

“I believe there is an ongoing police investigation, so I would encourage anyone who thinks they may have information to contact the police.”

Police officers cordoned off the area and there has been a uniformed presence throughout the day, including local PCSOs.

County Times:

The ATM is situated on the wall outside the Spar shop in a very visible and well-lit, heavily pedestrianised area, with many local residents living in shops above West Street premises.

Spar is situated yards from where the busy A470 bisects the town centre next to the town’s iconic clock tower.

Dyfed Powys Police have been contacted for comment.
