A Powys pub has been named as one of the best in Wales at a recent awards ceremony.

The Lamb and Flag Inn in Rhayader, was given the award for the best Pub/Inn in mid Wales at this year’s Welsh Hospitality awards.

The owner of the pub, Andrew Lewis, said he was pleased for the work of his staff to be recognised.

“It’s always nice to win something like this,” said Mr Lewis. “It’s down to the staff, the customers and the people in Rhayader. It’s a fantastic town with good locals.”

OTHER NEWS:

This is the second time the Lamb and Flag Inn has picked up the coveted award whilst Mr Lewis has owned the pub.

“We’ve had the Lamb and Flag for about seven years now we’re well established in the area – it’s a very good pub, said Mr Lewis.

“It’s a pub that has been in town for years and years. We own another pub in the town, the Crown, we’ve got the fish and chip shop, which we’ve had for 70 years. The coffee shop has been in the family for 50 years.”

County Times:

Mr Lewis said the secret of their success was the happy staff he had at the pub which he credits for all the pub’s success.

“We’ve got a good team there, the one thing we pride ourselves in is our staff,” said Mr Lewis. “People stay with us for a long time on the scale of this industry, where there is quite a lot of turnover, we have staff that have been there at least seven years and we are really proud of that.

“Obviously if they enjoy the place where they work they will put the effort in and look after the customers and we’ve got a good bunch of customers as well.

“It does very well in the summer with the outside seating and people passing up and down from North to South Wales obviously we are quite seasonal so the summers are manic and the winter you have to baton down the hatches a bit.”
