THE entire community of Montgomery joined the celebrations as the historic town toasted the 800th anniversary of its famous castle last weekend.

Montgomery School held a medieval day as part of the celebrations with children donning their costumes to mark the event.

Headteacher Sarah Brian said: "We had a fantastic day in school on Friday to celebrate 800 years of Montgomery Castle.

"The children’s costumes were amazing. It was lovely to see such a range of outfits.

" Thank you to mums and dads for the time taken to help your child take part. I would also like to say thank you to the Friends of the School for paying for our Medieval workshops.

"The children have had fun learning to play a range of pastime games, felting, making cord, and defending the castle; and the older children experienced a session in a courtroom.

"It was lovely to hear such a buzz of excitement as the children embraced these new experiences."

Monty's Brewery produced a special label with 800 bottles of beer for this special 800 year occasion.

The label has been designed to complement the occasion, although the brewery didn’t use herbs and nettles for flavour as they would have back then.

Montgomery Civic Society published a richly illustrated booklet to mark the 800th anniversary of the founding of the town's castle.

Based on the collections and archives of the Old Bell Museum, it tells the story of how the castle has transformed from a medieval stronghold into the visitor attraction and focus for town celebrations we know today.

The Old Bell hosted a special exhibition illustrating life in the Medieval period. The objects covered different aspects of life and include domestic equipment, religious artefacts and weapons.

Meanwhile bell ringers successfully rang seven Surprise Minor methods - London, Carlisle, Beverley, Westminster, Bourne, Norwich and Cambridge - at St Nicholas' Church.

The visit was organised by Nick Jones and the conductor was Peter Ellis.

Montgomery bell ringer David Thomas said: "It was nice to see one medieval Montgomery building celebrating the birthday of another."
