A memorial rugby match to be held in tribute to popular Newtown player Dylan Leach who suddenly died at the age of 23, has been cancelled.

In honour of his contribution to the club, Newtown RFC were due to be holding a memorial rugby match between the newly formed 'Green Army' and Rhyl IIs at the Recreation Ground on Pool Road with the game kicking off at midday, on Saturday (October 7).

The day was also meant to raise awareness of mental health, sudden death in young people and end of life care by collecting money for Ponthafren, 2wish and The Swan Fund.

Mr Leach was a popular member of the club until his tragic passing.

Dozens of tributes were posted on social media at the time of Dylan's death in March this year, from the friends, family, and rugby clubs across Wales.

"Everyone at the club is devastated to hear of the recent passing of first team player Dylan Leach," Newtown RFC said.

"Dylan had established himself as a prominent and popular member of the senior squad in recent years and we offer our deepest sympathy to Wayne, Donna, George, Ellie and Dylan's wider family and friends at this extremely difficult time."

Llandrillo Rugby Academy said: "Dylan spent two years with us at Coleg Llandrillo and was very well thought of amongst the staff and his peers. A polite and respectful young man who will be sorely missed."

Colwyn Bay Rugby Club shared: “Dylan starred in many fierce battles against the Bay, he will be remembered profoundly.”
