Welshpool 1940s Weekend returned for what organisers labelled its “biggest and best year yet” - featuring some very familiar faces.

Some less-than-ideal weather was not enough to stop crowds lining the streets of Welshpool for the town’s annual 1940s Weekend, especially with a few cast members of the classic sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo dropping by to participate in the celebrations on September 29 to October 1.

Guy Domville Siner, Kim Lesley Hartman and Richard Gibson, known for playing Gruber, Helga and Herr Flick, were featured in the event’s parade on Saturday, mixed with attendees and signed autographs for fans of the 1980s sitcom.

The event featured a number of attractions in the form of historical re-enactors, vintage vehicles and a 1940s themed funfair.

Welshpool 1940s Committee Chairman Alan Crowe said: “The 2023 1940s Weekend went very well, an excellent event that I can safely say was our biggest and best event yet.

“Despite the rain, we had a big crowd, with plenty of people dancing and enjoying themselves right to the end of each day.

“We received some very good feedback from all who attended, including one gentleman I spoke to who has attended every one of Welshpool’s 1940s Weekends, and I was very happy to hear him say that he thought the 2023 event was the best one yet.

“The cast of ‘Allo Allo were an absolute treat, and I think everyone really appreciated having them here.

“I was also really impressed with the number of vintage vehicles we had this year such as jeeps and lorries, despite the bad weather, including a man who had travelled all the way from the Isle of Wight.

“We work really hard each year to add new things and keep the event interesting for those who attend year after year, as well as attracting people who might not have ventured down before.

“So much work goes into the event that it’s always really satisfying for myself and the committee to see it all come together, especially after last year, which was our first year back after the Covid-19 Pandemic, so it’s wonderful to see it go from strength to strength.

“Each year builds the groundwork for what we can do at the next event, so just throwing a good weekend this year is already a good start for 12 months’ time, especially because we have already started planning the 2023 1940s Weekend.”
