A spelling error on a new 20mph road sign in a Powys village has been labelled as a “silly blunder” by residents.

Residents of Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, near Llanfyllin, were shocked to discover that the new road signs had misspelled the name of the mid Wales village, having been installed on September 16.

The area recently saw several of its road signs replaced as part of the Welsh Government’s ruling to place a default 20mph speed limit placed on restricted roads across Wales.

The new signs were also an opportunity to replace the existing road sings, which residents of the community have reportedly been campaigning to replace for a number of years.

Llansantffraid resident Doug Williams was among the first to notice the mistake, saying: “Shortly after the signs went up, several people around the village noticed that they had added an extra D to the end of Llansantffraid.

“As a community we have been making requests to Powys County Council for some renovated signs for a long time, around four or five years at least.

County Times: Multiple road sings in Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain failed to spell the village name correctly.

“We have waited long enough to see some action taken on this relatively small issue, only to see it made more complicated because of a simple, elementary mistake.

“How someone in a high rank can make such a silly blunder, is beyond me. It’s a small mistake but at the same time that’s what makes it all the more incredible that it wasn’t corrected before the entire sign was installed and erected.

OTHER NEWS:

“It’s especially ironic as we were told for years that the biggest obstacle to having new signs put in place was the cost, and now because of a mistake on their own behalf the will have to pay for the cost of replacing it all over again.

“It’s an unbelievable, expensive blunder that can’t stay the way it is. We can’t very well have a sign that makes it look like we don’t know how to spell our own village name.”

The new signs were placed along the A495 leading into the village, alerting drivers that they are in a 2mph zone in accordance with the law, passed in July 2022, that roads in residential areas will be reduced from a 30mph speed limit to 20mph.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “We can confirm that the spelling mistake on the new signs in Llansantffraid is purely down to human error.

“We will be replacing the signs as soon as possible and temporarily amending the current ones in the meantime.”
