A FARMING family from near Powys have introduced an amazing new feature for families to visit at their home – a maze, made out of maize.

The Hughes family opened the Nash Court Maize Maze on land at the farm, near Presteigne, earlier this month.

The family grow maize on the farm, which is just a stone’s throw over the Powys border, to feed their beef cattle throughout the winter, but this year decided to plant a maze in the maize, creating a maze in the shape of a scarecrow in one of their 14-acre fields.

“We thought it would be a great place for the public to come and spend an afternoon having fun with the whole family,” said Shirley Hughes.

“We used Watkin Contractors to precision drill the maize by GPS, Ben from Agrii in Presteigne then put together a map with our original design idea of a scarecrow.

“We have been busy making scarecrows, making an old Dutch barn into a refreshment area and making the seating and photo boards. We also have a bale castle and large sand pit for the children to play in.”

The Hugheses have been farming at Nash Court, near the village of Nash, for over 20 years, while the family also farm at Old Radnor and have done so for nearly 200 years.

“We have been growing maize on our farm for a few years now,” said Shirley.

“We grow it to feed our cows and goats throughout the winter months along with our own harvested grass. After we have finished opening our maze to the public it will be all be chopped up and stored ready to feed again next winter.”

The maize maze opened in mid-August at Nash Court (find it by typing LD8 2LG in to your satnav) and they are ready to welcome visitors to explore their 14-acre masterpiece, which includes a mega and mini maze. Explore the maize to find all the hidden clues.

There is also an outdoor play area with bale castle and sand pit, plus local ice creams from Kelsmor Diary and refreshments at the barn, with plenty of parking on site.
