The bridge has beeen described as a "treasured landmark" and is Grade II listed with the initial structure being built in 1827 by the celebrated architect and surveyor Thomas Penson.
In recent times the bridge has been the subject of dicussion with Newtwon and and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council as they have been trying to secure funding to rennovate the historic structure.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that thankfully no one had been hurt in the incident.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called to a one car collision on Broad Street, Newtown, at 8.10am. No-one was injured."
The bridge remained open following the crash, but traffic was slow afterwards, and Google Traffic mapping shows traffic through the town centre is moving, albeit slowly.
