Powys arts charity organises Welsh school workshop series

Arts Connection, a participatory arts charity that operates and organises events and workshops throughout Wales, have held creative workshops with pupils from a number of primary schools, centring on recycled materials and learning about the importance of renewable energy sources.

The group collaborated with artist Jane Mason to lead a workshop at Archdeacon Griffiths Primary School in Brecon, with another scheduled to be held at Ifron Valley school with artist Geraint Edwards.

The pupils at Archdeacon Griffiths Primary School constructed windmills from recycled materials and participated in projects in which they learned about various sources of renewable energy.

The collaboration was made possible through the support of renewable energy developer Wind2 and Arts and Business Cymru, who initiative the project and gave financial support via its CultureStep investment scheme.

Photos of the work created by the children will be exhibited at the Royal Welsh Show as a public showcase on the Wind2 stand, highlighting the themes of the workshop.

Sian Walters, Arts Manager for Arts Connection, said: "We are thrilled to be working alongside artists Geraint Edwards and Jane Mason in delivering these exciting recycled art workshops, the children made some amazing art works and were delighted with their creations.

“We are grateful to Wind2 and Arts and Business Cymru for their invaluable support in bringing this project to fruition at a time when raising awareness about what we can do about climate change is really needed.”

Jane Mason, who led the workshop in Archdeacon Griffiths Primary School, is a sculptor who transforms everyday materials into three-dimensional artworks, exploring the intersection of art and the environment, encouraging viewers to reflect on their relationship with the natural world.

Geraint Edwards, who is scheduled to lead the Ifron Valley school workshop is known for repurposing materials to create unique works of art with themes of sustainability and environmental awareness.
