Powys’s Iolo Williams is encouraging people to get involved in a week-long celebration of nature in Wales next week.

Great Big Green Week will see multiple events will be taking place in Newtwon as hundreds of events are put on across Wales – all to encourage the Welsh Government call for a Nature Positive Bill, without delay.

This comes as wildlife in Wales faces is in crisis with one in six species in Wales are at risk of extinction. Campaigners claim that - unlike England and Scotland - Wales has failed to take action on creating new environmental laws after the UK left the EU.

Iolo Williams, said he was happy with how much support the campaign had gained across Wales.

“It’s fantastic to see this upswell of support across Wales for the protection of nature. We all know how critical it is for our health and wellbeing, for the future of our children and grandchildren, and for the sheer wonder of it,” said Mr Williams.

“Now, we need the Welsh Government to take the real action that this campaign is calling for. We need deeds, not just words. It’s important that politicians hear that we care about nature and how much of society wants to see nature thrive.

"I support Climate Cymru’s campaign to make that happen and I hope you, your business, or group can get behind it too.”

A pair of event will take place at Hafan yr Afon on Thurday June 15 looking at the most environemtally friendly food choices as weel as showing young people in the area "who want to take action and help Wales become a Nature Positive nation".

The Welsh Government was advised three years ago that Wales is in need of new environmental laws. The non-profit, Climate Cymru, launched the Nature Positive Wales campaign to put pressure on the Welsh Government to take action, without further delay.

To showcase the depth of support for a Nature Positive Wales, the Climate Cymru team will hit the road in an electric vehicle (EV) for a Green Tour of Wales from June 10-18. 

On June 30, following the week-long activities, Climate Cymru will deliver an open letter to the Welsh Government demanding a Nature Positive Bill to protect the wildlife, nature and landscapes of Wales.

The letter has already been signed by over 340 organisations across the country, with a further 1,500 people having emailed the First Minister, Mark Drakeford, to demand action.
