THREE Powys-based dramatic societies will be hoping to shine and go on to represent Wales when the prestigious Drama Association of Wales final is held in Llandrindod Wells this weekend.

The Albert Hall is hosting the Wales final this Friday and Saturday, June 2-3, with six teams from across Wales, who have already performed in regional rounds, competing for the opportunity to represent Wales at the British finals in Belfast later in June.

This year’s Wales finalists include three local productions: Guilsfield Amateur Dramatic Society will put forward two offerings in the form of ‘Dig for the Diggers’ and ‘Jetty’, while Newtown Amateur Dramatic Society will put forward their show, called ‘The Book’.

The other three finalists are Cardiff’s Unknown Theatre Company presenting ‘A Super Happy Story’, Players Anonymous from Rhondda Cynon Taff whose show is called ‘Blind Date’ and Old Colwyn-based Action Theatre whose production is entitled ‘No Further Action’.

The adjudicator for the evening will be David Price, who lives just outside Builth Wells, and is a member of the Guild of Drama Adjudicators. He previously adjudicated the final in 2019 and last year he was invited to adjudicate the All England Theatre Festival British final.

The winner of the Welsh finals will go on to Belfast to compete to be Britain’s best over the weekend of June 30 to July 1, against societies from Northern Ireland, Scotland and England.

Drama Association of Wales chairman Teri McCarthy said: “We are very much looking forward to being at the Albert Hall for our final.

“It is a beautiful theatre and the management team there have been extremely welcoming. We have six excellent finalists and audiences can expect a high level of quality performances.

“Please come along and give these companies the support they deserve. For the first time, our final is being followed by local blogger Simon ‘Jungle’ John, who is out and about chatting to our adjudicator and teams who are taking part. Watch out for the blogs.”
