A POWYS author who published her debut novel last year, aged 64, is to give a talk at Llandrindod Library next week.

Kathy Biggs, who lives in Llanwrtyd Wells, will preview extracts of her novel, ‘The Luck’, at the event, which will be held on Friday, March 24, at 2pm.

“Local author Kathy Biggs will be previewing extracts from her debut novel ‘The Luck’,” said a post on the library’s Facebook page. “Kathy will have books for sale on the day, which she will sign for people.”

The Luck is set in 1930s rural America. Darragh O’Grady has a dream of buying a plane and becoming a crop duster.

OTHER NEWS:

One day, while flying off course, he spots from his cockpit an abandoned farmhouse below and is intrigued, so he buys it, even though it’s rumoured to have a tragic past. He sets up home, marries indomitable but damaged Beattie Darling and has a family. The book is about family, relationships and the ups and downs of life.

Luck has certainly played a role in Yorkshire native Kathy becoming a writer. She was working for Age Concern before being made redundant 6 years ago. Kathy wondered what was next; she enrolled on an Aberystwyth University creative writing course at Builth Wells’ Wyeside Arts Centre and describes that as the lightbulb moment. She was hooked after that, with the story for The Luck deriving from a cross-border trip she made with nursing friends across America in her youth.

County Times:

The Luck was published last October by Aberystwyth-based Honno, which concentrates on publishing women of Wales.

Honno have already accepted Kathy’s second novel, based in a scrapyard in Swansea, which is slated to come out this June.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available at the event. Call 01597 826870 to book a place.
