Fish and chip shops first appeared in the UK in the 1860s, and by 1910 there were over 25,000 across the UK.

By the 1930s there were over 35,000 shops and the British government safeguarded the supply of fish and chips during the First World War, and again in the Second World War.

It was one of the few foods in the UK not subject to rationing during the wars.

However, like so much of the high street, the industry has been in decline and in 2009 there were only approximately 10,000 across the country.

Thankfully Powys is home to some top ranked chippies and we have headed to TripAdvisor to share the top five.

Hennighans, Machynlleth

A reviewer said: "When I visited the bottom Hennighans shop earlier today I got phenomenal chips from a lad called Rhys. They had been cooked to perfection and he was as quick as a cheetah serving them up. Thankyou very much Rhys that was the best I've ever seen anybody serve chips. Incredible."

Another said: "Ordered using the online service and has no issues other than the wait was about an hour but not a major issue. If you require it quicker id ring up. The portions were big and the quality was good. Just what we needed after a long day out."

Another said: "Just ordered two cod, jumbo in batter, large chips, small chips, peas, and gravy for three of us. Cod was amazing and the batter was perfectly crispy and the portion size of everything was really good."

Caersws Fish Bar

A reviewer said: "We visited here on our last night while staying nearby Maesmwar Farm. We both agreed that the chips were cooked to perfection, they were a lovely colour and had just the right amount of crunch. The fish was a little too oily however was still so tasty. Would definitely go here if we visited again."

Another read: "Best fish and chips and I don't even like chips. Cooked fresh and crispy soft on the inside how they should be done. Very friendly staff. Specials worth travelling for. Hidden gem."

Evans' Fish Bar, Llanidloes

One reviewer said: "I have visited this chip shop whenever I am in the area. The food is first class and the staff are brilliant. The portions are very large but quality is not compromised. I recommend the a large cod and the saveloy sausages. Note that a large portion of chips will be enough for a family of four. Highly recommended."

Another said: "We decided to eat in on a rainy Tuesday night after having a couple of beers at the local pub. The staff were so nice and welcoming, we opted for the fish chips bread and butter and a cup of tea. It was delicious and probably one of the best chippy teas we’ve had in a while. We can definitely recommend."

Garthowen Fish Bar, Newtown

Another said: "Great service, good well cooked food and very reasonable priced. Would recommend to anyone, best we've had in ages" while a third said: "Best chippy for miles, home made fish cakes fish bites and southern fried chicken."
