A MAN is beginning a prison sentence after he attacked two police officers with weapons in Powys.

Scott Andrew Stephens was originally only handed a suspended prison sentence in August, despite the fact that both officers suffered injuries. But the 34-year-old was jailed this week after he breached the terms of that suspended sentence order.

Stephens, 34, had been arrested initially after acting in a threatening manner in Builth Wells on November 15 last year.

The attacks on Sergeant Hughes and PC Morris occurred at Brecon Police Station after Stephens, a former Builth resident but now of Matthew Street, Waun Wen, Swansea, had been arrested for threatening behaviour in Builth.

He had previously admitted that charge, as well as the two assaults on emergency workers.

He was handed a six-month custodial sentence on August 3 but magistrates suspended it for 2 years.

Stephens admitted breaching his suspended sentence when appearing at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Friday, October 28.

Magistrates delivering their original verdict said they had imposed a custodial sentence because the “offences were committed with weapons and injuries were caused to police officers – (as well as the defendant having) previous convictions for similar offences”.

They suspended the sentence for 2 years because they said he had shown he can work with probation.

The six-month term was imposed for the original incident in Builth, with Stephens given another two six-month sentences for each assault – although these terms were to be served concurrently.

Stephens was previously ordered to pay £120 compensation to each officer.
