A MOTORIST has been ordered to pay more than £800 in fines after he denied speeding in a Powys village, but then failed to show up to court for his trial.

Robert Lee Jenkins, from near Caerphilly, denied a charge of speeding through Newbridge-on-Wye on January 31 this year.

The case against the 49-year-old had been set down for a trial at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 28. However, Jenkins failed to attend, and the case was heard in his absence, with magistrates finding him guilty.

Jenkins, of Bryn Dolwen, Bedwas, stood charged with driving a Citroen Berlingo van on the B4358 Beulah Road, Newbridge, at 45 miles per hour. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 30mph, with Jenkins said to have been observed just after 1pm on January 31 this year.

The case was proved in Jenkins’ absence and he was fined £440 and ordered to pay £350 costs, as well as a £44 surcharge – meaning a total financial penalty of 834.

He will also have 4 penalty points placed on his driving licence.
