LOCAL young artists from the Saturday Art Club were excited to see their work on display at the latest exhibition at Centre Celf in Llandrindod Wells last month.

Their artwork was on display during a special private gallery launch event on Thursday, May 26. The exhibition features original work from a number of children and families. They were able to attend the weekly arts club free of charge thanks to Powys County Council’s ‘Winter of Wellbeing’ funding scheme, with the aim of providing a range of play, sporting and cultural activities for children and young people aged 0-25 during the winter.

Originally funded to run until March this year, the Saturday Art Club for young people aged up to 16 proved so popular it was able to secure funding from the Postcode Community Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, to continue until the beginning of July.

Evalina Morrison, 11, who took part in a number of art sessions and attended the private preview, said: “It was very nice and the teaching was excellent, it helped me learn how to draw and feel better about my art.”

The exhibition features a wide variety of mediums such as mosaic, sculpture, charcoal drawing, printing and mask-making, thanks to the different guest artists invited by Celf o Gwmpas to teach each week. Future techniques include cartoon drawing, landscape painting and felt making. Llandrindod county councillor Josie Ewing, who is also a trustee at Celf o Gwmpas, attended the exhibition preview event and said: “What a wonderful exhibition, children are our creative future, we need to encourage their freedom in art and celebrate their individuality.”

The exhibition runs until Thursday, June 23, and is available to view Tuesday and Thursdays from 10am-4pm and Saturday mornings from 10am-12.30pm at Centre Celf on Tremont Road, Llandrindod.

Centre Celf are happy to make other times available if you are unable to visit at these times, so get in touch. For more information about the Saturday Art Club, email projects@celfogwmpas.org or call 01597 822777.
