FALLEN trees have caused chaos along multiple sections of one of Powys' main roads today as Storm Eunice wreaks havoc across the county.

The A483 between Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells was closed at lunchtime for several hours, with motorists warned to avoid the area, which was closed in both directions. That road has since been reopned.

But the same road between Builth and Llanfair Grange, the other side of Llanwrtyd Wells, has since been closed in both directions and remains so due to "multiple" fallen trees, said Traffic Wales.

"Warning. A483 Both directions Llanfair Grange-Builth Wells closed due to multiple fallen trees," tweeted Traffic Wales around 1.30pm.

"Alternative route via A40 Brecon and A470 Builth Wells."

Traffic Wales tweeted about the earlier incident between Builth and Llandrindod: “A483 Closed in both directions between Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells due to fallen trees. Avoid the area if possible. Local diversions in place.”

The chaos comes after a “very rare” red warning was issued for parts of Wales by the Met Office with winds in excess of 90mph expected – the warning is amber in Powys, with the storm expected to be the worst the UK has seen in the last five to 10 years. The red warning expried in Wales at midday but an amber warning remains ion place in Powys until 9pm tonight.

Powys County Council announced on Thursday that all schools in the county would be closed today, while all train travel was halted too.

People have been warned to stay indoors due to “significant danger to life”.

The Met Office red warning, the most severe, runs from 7am until 12pm midday for parts of south Wales, with a less severe amber warning covering the rest of the country from 3am-9pm.
