A JAILED husband will be sentenced in the new year after being convicted of stalking and harassing his wife.

Mold Crown Court was told that Andrew Charles Haase is “at the moment a very dangerous man” after persistently breaching restraining orders barring him from contacting his wife following the break-up of their marriage. A hearing on Thursday [November 4] heard how Haase had spent most of 2021 behind bars after repeatedly ignoring the orders.

The 66-year-old initially appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court in July this year, charged with four counts of harassment, relating to breaching a restraining order imposed in January. It was recorded that in May and June this year Haase had contacted the victim in the case via a variety of means – including text, WhatsApp, letter and even postcard – when the order prohibited him from doing so.

At Mold Magistrates Court on October 9 he was convicted of one count of harassment, one of stalking and a third of causing criminal damage.

Sentencing was delayed at Thursday’s hearing, which heard how Haase’s life had begun to unravel following a motorcycle accident while holidaying with his wife in Greece last September.

“The concern is the court may not have sufficient information about him or his health to proceed to sentence today,” said Nicholas Williams, acting for Haase, whose last know address was the Bell Hotel, Newtown.

“The reality is that ever since January this year he has been on a revolving door in prison. He continually breaches the order once he’s released from prison so the court may want to look a little more deeply behind the reasons for his offending.

“In September last year Mr Haase had a serious motorcycle accident, he ended up in hospital. Thereafter he was admitted as an in-patient in a psychiatric unit in Greece and was there for about six weeks. He was discharged, there doesn’t seem to have been any formal diagnosis.

“He said he had been seen by the mental health team in prison but there has not been a proper diagnosis.”

Judge David Hale said Haase was experiencing "major delusions", adding: “He is at the moment a very dangerous man. It is such a serious case. Since this incident your behaviour has been intolerable."

Judge Hale ordered a report and Haase will reappear at Mold for sentence on January 6, 2022. He will remain in custody until that date.
