A cross-party group of Members of the Senedd will be attending COP26 from November 3-11, representing the people of Wales at the summit in Glasgow – including Montgomeryshire representative Russell George.

Mr George, the chair of the health and social care committee, will join nine colleagues at the climate change summit, which begins next week. Among the MSs joining Mr George are Llyr Gruffydd, the chair of the climate change committee.

MSs will attend the UN-managed ‘blue zone’ where negotiations will take place and each day will cover a different theme. MSs will focus on different policy areas.

Mr Gruffydd said: “Wales’ voice must be heard at COP26. That’s why it’s so important to involve Welsh citizens in this debate. They are the ones who will feel the impact of inaction.

“And we know they are telling us loud and clear that they want governments to do more and to do it more quickly. We need to listen to those voices.

“This is such a concerning time – there are stories in the news almost every day of extreme weather events or biodiversity loss. It’s often tempting to be fatalistic, to believe that we have passed the tipping point. But the positive we must hold on to is that, driven by their citizens, governments are starting to understand that they need to act.

“I hope we will see significant commitments from governments during COP26. As hosts, the UK Government must lead the way – it must be bold and, most importantly, must ensure that the funding is available to make progress more quickly.

“Even though Wales is a small country, it can also have a big impact, by setting an example to other countries. We have already seen some progress from the Welsh Government, but it needs to start translating its good intentions into decisive actions.

“We as elected members will be doing all we can at COP26 and making the voices of the Welsh people heard loud and clear.”

Themes of sessions at COP26 include finance, energy, youth and public empowerment, nature, adaptation, loss and damage, gender/science and innovation, transport, cities, regions and the built environment

On November 11, the Senedd’s climate change, environment and infrastructure committee will be meeting remotely and marking the end of COP26. Members will be visiting local environmental projects in Wales.
