AS well as pulling pints, a pub in Powys will be hoping to pull in the title of being the best in Wales in a few days’ time.

The Harp Inn, located in Old Radnor, has already been named the best boozer in Powys by the National Pub & Bar Awards 2021. Now, it will hope to be crowned best in Wales at a glittering ceremony in London on Monday, September 6, where it is going up against seven other pubs nationwide.

The other contenders for the Welsh crown are: The Hare & Hounds, Aberthin, Vale of Glamorgan; The Anchor, Tintern, Monmouthshire; The Old House 1147, Maesteg, Bridgend; Britannia Inn, Swansea; Ty Coch Inn, Morfa Nefyn, Gwynedd; The Three Eagles, Llangollen, Denbighshire and The Griffin Dale, Dale, Pembrokeshire.

The Harp is one of 94 regional champions from across the UK, with winners to be crowned in each of 15 regions, while those 15 will also be in with a chance of winning the esteemed overall accolade – the National Pub & Bar of the Year.

County Times: The Harp Inn, Old Radnor

“We are absolutely delighted, after a difficult year, to have been awarded the Best Pub in Powys by the National Pub and Bar Awards,” said the Harp on the pub’s Facebook page after being announced as the best pub in the county and one of the eight Welsh finalists.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us since reopening.”

It’s already been a decent few years for the pub – which boasts a delicious menu as well as stunning views of the local landscape, being situated on top of a hill.

The pub was named the Good Pub Guide’s Country Pub of the Year in 2020.

The Harp is a lovely old Welsh longhouse inn perched on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful Radnor Valley. Independently owned and run by Chris and Angela Ireland since 2010, with head chef Josh Smith and general manager Katie Marsden coming on board in 2018, the Harp is a real pub, with ancient slate floors, oak beams, antique settles, a huge open log fire and has five guestrooms.

The cosy bar offers cask-conditioned real ales, local cider and perry and a wide range of good wines and soft drinks. The menu comprises home-cooked and mainly locally-sourced food and offers simple pub classics like home-cooked ham with free-range eggs and proper chips alongside imaginative modern dishes created by Josh.
