TWO young readers from Builth Wells have been presented with a book token by the Friends of Builth Wells Library to celebrate their success in a reading challenge that took place this summer.

Children aged between four and 12 were challenged to read six books over the summer holidays as part of ‘Silly Squad’, the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge.

Four-year-old twins Huw and Sion Elias each won a £5 book token after being named winners of the competition.

Due to the pandemic this year’s challenge was slightly different and delivered both digitally and by using the library’s order and collect service.

Although overall numbers were down on previous years due to the pandemic, staff at the library were delighted with the uptake by local children.

Jan Newton, chair of the Friends of the Library, said: “Reading for pleasure is a vital key to learning, and I believe that our libraries play a significant role in helping towards this aim.

“Libraries continue in the right direction to increase active readers and encourage the enjoyment of reading in schools and communities.”

Trish Thomas, reader development librarian, added: “We wish to thank the Friends of the Library for donating the £5 book tokens to be spent at Verzon Books in Llandrindod Wells.”
