MICK Lewis is celebrating after returning from the British Masters Judo Championships with a silver medal.

The Trewern based judoka travelled to London to take on the best veteran judo masters from across Great Britain last weekend.

The Powys judoka fought his way to to the final where he met former multiple world and British champion Terry Watt for the gold in the final.

Lewis kept attacking but the greater experienced man took the gold with the Powys judoka happy with silver following a memorable weekend in the capital.

His run to the final and medal represents another feather in the cap for the Powys club which has made a name for itself over the years for developing judo talent of all ages.

Lewis is a member of the Powys based GO JUDO club which meets weekly in Llandrinio and Welshpool and run by Pete Castell and his daughter Zoe.

Following his silver medal success, the student thanked his coach Pete Castell for his support and encouragement since joining the club.

He said: “I really enjoyed myself and it is definitely something I am planning on doing again in the future.

“Thanks to Pete and everyone at GO JUDO for their support.”

Any aspiring young people from the age of six years are welcome at GO JUDO and a chance to learn the sport.

Classes are held at Welshpool’s Flash Leisure Centre on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm and at Llandrinio Village Hall from 6pm to 8pm with the first and second lessons free of charge.

The club has produced some top talent over the years with Castell a student of former Welsh coach Alan whose wife Sue, also served as coach at the club.
