Two roads around mid Wales have been closed by Dyfed Powys Police because of “poor road conditions”.

Dyfed Powys Police has confirmed that a stretch of road from Hirnant junction in Staylittle to Forge Road in Machynlleth, is closed because of the weather.

And the A44 out of county, between Aberystwyth and Ponterwyd, is also closed.

Police say the closures are due to “poor weather conditions”, with drivers asked to avoid the areas and find alternative routes for their journeys.

The closure comes as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for St David’s Day, which could see rain and wind causing disruptions on narrow roads, while also warning that snow might be possible on higher routes.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "A band of rain, heavy at times, is expected to move north and east on Friday.

OTHER NEWS:

"10 to 15 mm of rainfall is likely widely, with perhaps 30 mm in a few locations. With much of the rain falling in 3 hours some travel disruption is probable.

"Some snow is also likely to affect some higher routes and communities for a brief time."

On Saturday, February 22, one driver ended up in a ditch on the side of Forge Road after reportedly hitting a patch of black ice on the road, which had been removed from Powys Council’s gritting network.

A Spokesperson for Powys County Council said: "The council has a network of priority routes which are gritted as a precautionary measure when temperatures are forecast to drop.

“Drivers should be aware of the need to drive with due care at all times, especially when roads frosts or freezing temperatures follow rain.”
