In pictures: A step back in time to Powys life in 1998

We truly hope you are enjoying our new regular bygones pages as we share the gems of our archive.

Hopefully there is something for each generation of the family and these pictures will bring back memories long forgotten and perhaps even rekindle any lost connections.

Today we are venturing back to 1998.

The year is perhaps best remembered for the Monica Lewinsky scandal when U.S. President Bill Clinton admitted in taped testimony that he had an “improper physical relationship” with White House intern.

Closer to home the introduction of the Euro in 1998 was a ground breaking endeavour while 1998 saw Microsoft towering above all, dominating homes, offices, and even schools, Windows became synonymous with computing.

Under the visionary leadership of Bill Gates, Microsoft didn’t just set industry standards; it changed how society functioned.

1998 was the year children and adults alike became enchanted by a peculiar creature named Furby. Beyond being a toy, it was a companion, an obsession, and for many, a first step into the world of interactive electronic gadgets.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was also at its height as a cultural phenomenon. It tackled teenage angst, supernatural elements, and the age-old battle between good and evil.

Meanwhile Debbie Jones from Guilsfield Primary School was named Summer Queen.

Kerry Football Club’s Spar Mid Wales League title winning squad and management are the focus of our next picture.

Our final picture on this page shows the long-defunct Newtown Queen’s Head Football Club which competed in the now disbanded Newtown Sunday League. Do you recognise any familiar faces?

Moving onto the facing page we share a picture of Llangurig Primary School pupils receiving a cheque from Barclays Bank to improve outdoor facilities.

This picture is made all the more poignant by the fact Barclays no longer has a presence in much of Powys with virtually all their branches closed.

Next we share a picture of Christine Francis from Welshpool who undertook a working holiday to China in 1998.
