DYLAN McPhee admits he is “absolutely buzzing” to represent Wales at cricket as he gets set to jet off to South Africa to play in the Over 40s World Cup.

McPhee, a talented sportsman who used to play Welsh Premier League football for hometown club Rhayader Town, as well as Carmarthen Town, plays his cricket with Builth Wells in the GB Liners Marches League. He is also joint manager of Builth Wells, who play third tier football in the Ardal North East League.

McPhee made his Wales bow at over 40s level in May 2023, in a one-day international against England, and found out he had made the Wales World Cup squad in November.

“Cricket has always been a huge passion of mine and being selected to play for Wales is not only an honour but also a dream come true,” said the 47-year-old Builth resident.

“To play at this level and against some top international players will be a challenge but one I intend to rise to, making my family and country proud.

“We are in a very tough group and the schedule is intense with 5 group games in the first 7 days.”

McPhee jets out with the Welsh squad to Cape Town tomorrow (February 16). His family – wife Sarah and young sons Reuben and Ollie – are also off to the South African sunshine for part of the tournament, which starts on Monday and finishes on March 1.

Wales face a tall task, starting their World Cup campaign against the hosts. Wales are pooled in a tough-looking Group B which also includes New Zealand, India, the UAE and Sri Lanka.

“It’s a great honour to represent my country and something I am incredibly proud of,” McPhee said on his Dylan McPhee - Wales Over 40's World Cup Facebook page, which he has created in order to thank sponsors and so friends and family can keep up to date with the Wales games.

There will be live links to games, photos and more. “The team get on the plane on the 16th February and we can't wait to take to the field and represent Wales,” he added.

“I’d like to thank my family and friends for their massive support, as without them this trip would only be a dream.

“Sarah, Reuben and Ollie you have been like rocks, have been with me every step of the way and will be a massive part of this World Cup. I can’t wait to share it with you.

“Mum and dad, thank you for your guidance and helping me get to this point, especially supporting me with all my sporting ambitions.”
