As hundreds of houses within Powys have been sold over the course of 2023, the County Times has picked six of the best from across the area.

From county houses dating back to the 1500s to little cottages tucked away in Mid Wales towns, Powys is filled with unique and historical houses, some of which were bought by new owners in 2023.

Having looked through dozens of notable houses that were sold over the last 12 months, here are ten of the most interesting.

Not necessarily the most expensive or extravagant, but some that stood out from the many bought between January and December.

Llanfyllin charm

County Times: Three storey house in Llanidloes.

Found in Llanfyllin, this 8 bedroom country house was bought in January for nearly £500,000. The property reportedly has fifteenth century origins and is a Grade 2 listed building, designated to a historically important building of special interest by Cadw.

Llanidloes townhouse

Another Grade 2 listed building that was bought in 2023 lies in Llanidloes, in the form of a  three storey terraced townhouse. Complete with four bedrooms and described by RightMove as having an interior which has been “modernised to provide a comfortable home”, the property sold for £170,000 in March 2023.

Welshpool cottage

County Times: Grade 2 listed cottage in Welshpool.

Smaller buildings that were Grade 2 listed also found themselves under new ownership in 2023, such as a cottage in Welshpool. The property sold for £115,000 in September.

Montgomery cottage

Another Grade 2 listed cottage to be sold in 2023, this time for £175,000, came in the form of one in Montgomery.

As well as the house itself carrying history, it is located on a conservation area and was described by RightMove as featuring a “wealth of charm and character”.

Llan'dod townhouse

Another house that stood out in Llandrindod Wells was a three storey Edwardian terraced house which included six bedrooms. The property sold for £260,000 in August, a price rise of 57 percent since it last went on the market in 2016.

A large garden was also the defining feature of a house in Knighton that sold for £490,000, a detached executive house featuring a south facing veranda and large garden space at the front and rear of the property.

Rare Presteigne opportunity

County Times: An extended detached house in Presteigne.

Some houses went on the market for the first time in many years, such as a semi-detached house in Presteigne, which went on the market for the first time in almost 20 years, having last been bought in 2004.

The extended house featured a mix of wood panelling and brickwork, as well as four bedrooms and an adjoining playing field.
