I read with interest three separate items in your last edition which are actually strangely related to one another.
The first was Joyce Watson MS’s column waxing eloquent in support of her Government’s blanket speed limit reduction from 30 to 20 mph and next to that are two letters from your readers giving reasons why that will be unworkable.
Secondly we see the results of a high speed night time crash in Carno (30 mph limit ) where the driver was going so fast his engine was ripped out of their car.
Thirdly we read later that it is estimated our Powys Health Board will this year be over £33million pounds in deficit. Ironically this is the actual cost of rolling out this blanket speed reduction in Wales!
OTHER NEWS:
- Court rules on motocross races near William Hague's Powys mansion amid noise row
- Plans revealed to save historic Powys pub for future generations
- Road built on Powys graveyard DID breach planning consent, council says
Most people will surely have no objection to the speed reduction in areas where it is really necessary ,e,g. outside schools and hospitals and other sensitive areas.
Also it is anticipated the new law will bring higher levels of urban pollution, increased fuel costs and also agitated drivers ironically causing more accidents.
Wouldn’t it be more sensible then to put more resources restricting speeds in these sensitive areas, preventing people driving recklessly/ dangerously and re-directing the savings into much needed NHS needs?
