A Powys food establishment that received a zero-rated food hygiene score was found to have issues with mould and mice.

Knighton Football Club’s Social Club was given the lowest score available by the Food Standards Agency with many areas being advised to be deep cleaned and disinfected.

Among the findings of the report was that there was “no working thermometer in the fridge” meaning the temperature of the food inside could not be monitored along with this “a mouldy ready meal (sausage and mash) was found in the fridge.”

The issues around cleanliness were not limited to the fridge as the report noted that “the standard of cleanliness to the structure of the premises throughout was very poor and as mice activity was noted, a thorough deep clean and disinfection is required, of the cellar, bottle store, bar area, and kitchen.”

OTHER NEWS:

They found “the chest freezer in the cellar and the bottle store were frosted up and very mouldy” and it was recommended that they “defrost both freezers and deep clean, removing all mould” and “maintain in a clean condition thereafter.”

The club has been approached for comment.

Issues around personal hygiene were also raised as “it was noted that the wash hand basin was not in regular use”.

The inspector in their report said: “It was apparent during my inspection that the level of food hygiene awareness amongst your staff/volunteers was inadequate.

“You must ensure that all food handlers engaged in your food business are supervised, instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters as necessary, bearing in mind the type of work which they do.”

County Times:

They added: “As a matter of priority, you must put in place an implement a suitable food safety management system.

“In addition, you must ensure that staff are properly trained and are aware of the controls they need to carry out.

"Staff must also be supervised and checked as necessary, so you are sure that all controls that are critical to food safety are being properly implemented and maintained.”
