People are being urged to get creative and start making costumes to celebrate 450 years since Bishop’s Castle was granted a charter.

A series of free informal and fun costume making workshops will be held in the town’s Public Hall throughout May to help people get stuck into the dressing up for the big occasion Sunday, July 16.

Anne McWhirter who is running the workshops runs a re-enactor group and has been making high quality costume since 1994, researching and making clothing from the period.

On July 16, 1573, Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to Bishop’s Castle.

She said: “The more people in the town who can be in costume the better we will all look, but the key to all of this is to have some fun!

“We want people to feel as good as they look without having to spend a lot of money. We know that some people don’t sew, can’t sew, and some will be experienced needle workers. The workshops are for everyone all ages, male and female.”

There are two more free workshops this month, then a gap of a few weeks before the final workshop, to help people finish their look.

The next workshop is on Wednesday, May 24, from 1pm to 4pm, and Wednesday, May 31, from 5pm to 8pm. People are invited to drop in any time at the Public Hall, Station Street and it is hoped that anyone who is busy during the afternoon will find the evening sessions convenient.

Anne added: “These informal and fun workshops will be a chance to chat and cheat your way to a costume to be proud of.

“I am looking forward to meeting you, all are welcome.”

Jesters, live music, food, drink and more will be part of the charter celebration and street fair in the town on July 16 from 10am to 4pm.

Bishop’s Castle 450 Year Charter Celebration is supported by Bishop’s Castle Town Council.
