THE future stars of South Powys rugby underlined their class with 31-5 victory over Bridgend District last week.

The Mid District youth rugby squad was formed this year and has gone from strength under the management of Adam Johnstone and coaches Richard Lawrence and Chris Offa.

The side is made up of the best players from across Brecknockshire and dominated by the emerging stars of the thriving youth set up of Swalec Division Two West Central side Builth Wells.

The Bulls have played a crucial role in the running of the side since initial trials last month.

Head coach Lawrence said: “We were pushed for time because the first game was only two weeks later which was against Swansea District in Llandarcy who put up a good fight for most of the game before we won 38-24.

“With only one more training session we played Bridgend District at Banwen RFC last week and won 31-5.”

Tries from Geraint Powell, Joe Winfield, Gethin Williams and Ben Griffin ensured a spectacular win for the Mid Distric side.

“Given the short notice we had of putting the team together it shows great credit to the players for their efforts and commitment and the clubs they belong to should be very proud of them,” said Lawrence.

“There are some very strong characters amongst them. This bunch of players play an expansive fast game and have really bonded together to make a very strong team.”

“There’s currently 12 lads from Builth, five from Brecon, seven from Gwernyfed and two Mountain Ash players in the squad. All these clubs are doing very well in their leagues.”

The side will now prepare for the WRU districts semi-final against Swansea District next month and in the meantime looking to arrange a friendly match.

“We are looking forward it and sure the team will be even stronger by then after more time together.” said Lawrence.
