MACHYNLLETH celebrated their first win of 2018 with a 19-0 win at home to North Wales League Three basement side Benllech.

Tries from Ryan Blockley, Hedd Wynn and Matthew Hughes with two conversions from Cameron Simmonds-Sandy ensured the points for the hosts.

Meanwhile Newtown’s testing start to the year continued with a 15-0 defeat at Abergele in division two.

Captain Chris Meyers crossed for the opening try following a siege on the Town line with Richard Meddlicott converting.

Meddlicott added a penalty to extend the home side’s lead after the break before Richard Hillier crossed to complete the scoring.

Town enjoyed their spell of the game when Alex Murray was sin binned for the hosts late on but failed to capitalise on the advantage as Abergele held firm.

Elsewhere Weshpool hit back to prevail 17-5 winners against Rhyl who forged ahead with an early try only for Ryan Goodwin to cross fir a try to level before half-time.

Elsewhere COBRA overcame Wrexham 18-6 in Meifod with the game switched to the smaller school field due to the adverse conditions.

COBRA led for the first time with centre Richard Roberts crossing the whitewash after Iwan Vaughan and Richard Jones carved open the visiting defence following a break from a powerful scrum.

Worthington added the extras as the hosts established a seven point interval lead.

The sides traded kicks early in the second-half with Rhodri Jones on target for COBRA before Richard Roberts seized upon a fumble in the Wrexham ranks to kick and chase the loose ball over the try line to secure a hard-fought victory.
